Dieu assyro-babylonien de la sagesse et de l’art d’écrire. Fils de Marduk, dieu devenu national, Nabu partage son destin ; on les associe étroitement à partir du \NABU IIe millénaire. Sa ville, Borsippa, est peu éloignée de la capitale, dont le temple principal est dès lors sans cesse cité avec le sien : l’Ezida. Sa spécialité lui valut la dévotion active des scribes. On symbolisait leur divin patron par un calame et par une tablette cunéiforme. L’astrologie lui attribua la planète Mercure. Les Assyriens, qui lui furent particulièrement attachés, contribuèrent, à partir du \NABU VIIIe siècle, à le faire entrer en concurrence avec Marduk lui-même, jusqu’en Mésopotamie du Sud.
